Who is the company?

Film 4 is a production company, although Film 4 has many other such as Film 4 distribution which distributes films that they have produced, like ‘Inbetweeners 2’. They were responsible for the marketing and releasing the film in to cinemas and on the television, Inbetweeners 2 was also exhibited by Film 4 as they put it on their TV programme and made it available for the audience. Film 4 parent company is Channel 4. A parent company is a company that controls other, smaller businesses by owning an influential amount of voting stock or control. Parent companies are typically larger firms that display control over one or more small subsidiaries in the same industry. Channel 4 also own Channel 4 own More 4, Film 4, E4 and Channel 4 HD. The are advantages with films being owned by parent companies as they offer a platform for British and independent cinema on terrestrial television by committing to showing each one of Film 4 Productions films on Channel 4 and its sister station Film Four. It also allows a bigger budget on films which are produced by Film 4 which means the films will have better quality.

What do the company produce?

Film 4 funds around 20 films a year and fund around £500,000 on each film. Last year in 2015 they funded 10 films. Film 4 are solo funders but also specialize in co-production. Film 4 funded a number of successful documentaries, including Biggie and Tupac and The Filth and The Fury. In 1992 Film 4 had an unanticipated success with the IRA/transsexual drama The Crying Game, which was a big hit in America, winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay. Film 4 traditionally contributing 15-25% of an independent film’s budget such as My Beautiful Laundrette and Letter to Brezhnev. They produce films of many other genres such as Dark River which is a mystery/thriller and also Slow West which is a western/action.

Where is the company based?


Film 4 is funded in the UK, although it is funded in the UK it funds films all around the world such as Slumdog Millionaire which was made in India and Slow West which is shot in the US. Film 4 have co-produced with BFI, West End Team and Rising Stars to make the film Old Boys. This film was very successful and was very well co-produced. The big successes for Film 4 in recent times are Slumdog Millionaire, Inbetweeners 2, 12 Years a Slave, these films have been very profitable and their box offices have been very big.


Why is the company important to the UK film industry?

Film 4 ethos is To develop (new) British Talent and be a leader of innovation in the British Film industry. They would also like to invest around £500,000 per film, at a rate of around 20 films a year as some years they can not produce up to 20 films. They want to support more international independent film-makers by co-investigating into their films, this would help the film-makers become more known around the world. Film 4 would also like to offer a platform for British and independent cinema on terrestrial television by committing to showing each one of Film Four Productions films on Channel 4 and it’s sister station Film Four. Films such as Shaun The Sheep have become successful. Also films like The King’s Speech and Philomena have also been very successful for Film 4.
