Conventions of an opening sequence

What's In The News

 Duran Williams Article
Duran Williams,
A boy who was stabbed in Dagenham, he was stabbed in the night time at around 23:00, he was know to be quite humble and very helpful , could be used potentially to show adolescence within these type of areas, could be revolved round a killing and the effect it has on family and friends. This deals with themes such as corruption of youth and the aftermath, it could also deal with the repercussion of murder, either by there being revenge or ending up in jail.
 Felix,
A boy who faced a huge amount of bullying over a course of 7 years he was bullied until he committed suicide, he stepped in front of a train. 'The most hated person in the school', he became a target because he was not allowed to play call of duty. People who never even knew him started to bully him online. He was bullied over social platforms like ask.fm. This could be used in my production as it uses themes such as school life, corruption of youth and adolescence.

Patrick is a man now who suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar, he became homeless from drug and alcohol abuse. He refuses to get help as he believes the system has failed him. I could use this as it has themes of poverty and drug abuse. He also faces mental problems which could introduce themes of disability. As he refuses help it cannot be forced upon him but his sister is also trying to deal with this problem of his, this could explore the theme of family life and drug abuse.
This post has to do with the addiction towards drugs and alcoholism, which can be a very sensitive topic for some people, it could also bring in ideas of poverty as people are so addicted all they spend their money on is alcohol. The effect of alcohol can have a very negative effect towards children as the parents may have been mistreating them or neglecting them as they were not in the right state of mind. This could be used in my production to show the true effect of alcohol abuse not only on the person drinking but the effect it has on everybody else around

Conventions of Institutional Credits

An Education - http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/an-education/

The opening sequence of An Education is set in an all girls school as  and you can tell the story had something to do with a school girls but this is not shown in the opening sequence. The themes of this film are school life, love and friendship. The girls are wearing school uniform is most scenes which denotes they are teenagers.

The institutional logo and the other titles both have the same typography. The typography is a chalk board style as it is about school so it matches the theme. This would give a hint to the audience that the film is going to be about school life and young people.

It is also bold so it can stand out and it looks modern. The font is white so you can easily see it with a black background. There is also a picture of a game on the floor which is usually seen in a playground, this connotes that the film is about school life. The shoes are like school shoes which also goes with the playground image and the whole school theme.

The second screenshot displays the production companies which is the first thing that is shown after the institutional logo.

I have learnt that the institutional credits are a very important part of the film as it is the first scene which could introduce the genre and the themes. They also credit the people who was important in the production of the film, which I i did not know before as i thought it only showed the title. The credits do not have to be detailed to look good, when learning about institutional credits I saw a lot of simply credits which worked well as they went with the background or it fit the theme.

Commsioner Factfile Film 4

Who is the company?

Film 4 is a production company, although Film 4 has many other such as Film 4 distribution which distributes films that they have produced, like ‘Inbetweeners 2’. They were responsible for the marketing and releasing the film in to cinemas and on the television, Inbetweeners 2 was also exhibited by Film 4 as they put it on their TV programme and made it available for the audience. Film 4 parent company is Channel 4. A parent company is a company that controls other, smaller businesses by owning an influential amount of voting stock or control. Parent companies are typically larger firms that display control over one or more small subsidiaries in the same industry. Channel 4 also own Channel 4 own More 4, Film 4, E4 and Channel 4 HD. The are advantages with films being owned by parent companies as they offer a platform for British and independent cinema on terrestrial television by committing to showing each one of Film 4 Productions films on Channel 4 and its sister station Film Four. It also allows a bigger budget on films which are produced by Film 4 which means the films will have better quality.

What do the company produce?

Film 4 funds around 20 films a year and fund around £500,000 on each film. Last year in 2015 they funded 10 films. Film 4 are solo funders but also specialize in co-production. Film 4 funded a number of successful documentaries, including Biggie and Tupac and The Filth and The Fury. In 1992 Film 4 had an unanticipated success with the IRA/transsexual drama The Crying Game, which was a big hit in America, winning an Oscar for Best Screenplay. Film 4 traditionally contributing 15-25% of an independent film’s budget such as My Beautiful Laundrette and Letter to Brezhnev. Film 4 is funded in the UK, although it is funded in the UK it funds films all around the world such as Slumdog Millionaire which was made in India and Slow West which is shot in the US. Film 4 have co-produced with BFI, West End Team and Rising Stars to make the film Old Boys. This film was very successful and was very well co-produced. The big successes for Film 4 in recent times are Slumdog Millionaire, Inbetweeners 2, 12 Years a Slave, these films have been very profitable and their box offices have been very big.

Why is the company important to the UK film industry?

Film 4 ethos is To develop (new) British Talent and be a leader of innovation in the British Film industry. They would also like to invest around £500,000 per film, at a rate of around 20 films a year as some years they can not produce up to 20 films. They want to support more international independent film-makers by co-investigating into their films, this would help the film-makers become more known around the world. Film 4 would also like to offer a platform for British and independent cinema on terrestrial television by committing to showing each one of Film Four Productions films on Channel 4 and it’s sister station Film Four. Films such as Shaun The Sheep have become successful. Also films like The King’s Speech and Philomena have also been very successful for Film 4.

BSR Mise-en-Scene Analysis

Fish Tank

1:01
The location of which the film is set is in looks like a council estate. By the film being set in a council estate indicates that the area is probably developing and quiet rough. Normally in BSR films when it is set in a council estate there is crime/gang crime involved. The fact it is set in this location tell us that the people living there are probably working class. BSR films are normally about average British people going through their life, the location of the movie shows the that the characters are average people who may be going through struggles.

3:19
The people are dressed in tracksuits, shorts and tank tops. This tells the audience that the characters might not be very wealthy and are probably of a working class. In BSR films normally teenagers would be wearing similar style to this, which indicates that the person might be a quiet poor or a criminal. The fact that all the characters in this shot are dressed basically the same indicates that most people in this area are probably of a working class and are all in the same position financially.

1:50
The character in the opening sequence is by herself throughout the whole scene. This might tell the audience that she might be depressed or struggling with something. This might also tell the audience that the character has no one else such as family or friends. In BSR normally the main character is struggling for some reason.

2:53
This screenshot displays 4 boys, there is one black boy which connotes that the film mainly casted white people. They might have casted mainly white people to keep it realistic, as the area is populated my mostly white people. You can tell the boys are of a working class by what they are wearing. Their clothes are very baggy, this connotes that the clothes was not brought to look good but they was brought to last. this film uses generic conventions of BSR films as it shows people of a working class.

2:40
In this screenshot you can see a lot of cheap cars compared to others cars you would see. This connotes that the area is developing and the people in the area probably don't have a lot of money. This also connotes that the film is set in modern day as the cars are modern. Most of buildings in the background a block of flats which also connotes that the area is developing. In BSR films when people see block of flats, they would think of crime, gang violence and poverty.

In my opening sequence work, I will use mise-en-scene to help me introduce the characters. I will also use location to show the audience the struggles of what the characters will have to go through.
